One of the basic truths that we must realize and accept is that coaches cheat. It’s the nature of the game that they will try to find ways around the rules. That’s why there are prohibitions against the hidden ball trick, the hideout play, and the “fumble-rooskie.”
Some smart coach figures out how to get around the spirit of the rules, and so the rules makers write a rule to address the transgression. Because they’re always pushing the envelope, the game progresses. Ethically it may not be the ideal of sportsmanship, but some of that cheating by coaches has helped with the development of the game.
