typical mechanic for a wing official is the pre-snap positioning, straddling the yard line on which the ball is positioned and then communicating Team A’s line of scrimmage position to any wide receiver who comes his way. The wing’s essential pre-snap duty is to identify the eligible receiver(s) on his side of the field; that requires him to determine which players are on and off the line of scrimmage.
On a well-marked artificial turf field, determining who’s on or off the line is relatively easy. Wing officials should clearly communicate with the head coach in the pregame conference to clarify how they’ll be communicating with the receivers on their side.
