Numbering
A key mechanic for officials is to recognize the eligible receivers, and forward pass eligibility is a function of both a player’s number and his position, either as a back or a lineman, at the snap.
Player numbering requirements (per NFHS 7-2-5) include:
a. At the snap, at least seven A players shall be on their line of scrimmage.
b. At the snap, at least five A players on the line of scrimmage must be numbered 50-79.
