ou’re the Head Linesman. A12 is heading down his line of scrimmage toward you with A26 several yards upfield and in position to receive a backward pass. Here are a couple of scenarios to ponder, with the main question:

To bag or not to bag …?

a. Runner A12 is on the A 30 and running parallel to the line of scrimmage when he is hit from behind by B70. The ball pops up into the air and is intercepted by B56 at the A 29.

b. Runner A12 is on the A 30 and running parallel to the line of scrimmage when he throws a backward pass toward A26. The ball is intercepted by B56 at the A 29.

Situation a includes a fumble. Official (human) nature tends to say: Beanbag the fumble.

Situation b includes a backward pass. Official (human) nature tends to say: Don’t bag the backward pass.

Both situations have the same net result. A change of possession. So: How many of you are deploying your beanbags here?
