Why release?
The intent of the wings releasing at the snap, when that snap occurs inside B’s 10 yard line, is simply to put those officials in better position to rule on forward progress at the goal line and, more specifically, to determine if the ball in possession of a Team A player breaks the plane of B’s goal line. To illustrate, let’s get to a caseplay.
Getting to the goal line
Team A is on the B 8 yard line with a first down. At the snap of the ball both the Linesman and Line Judge will release with a slide-and-glide step toward B’s goal line. The intent in the release is to have both wings in a more favorable position to reach the goal line before the runner in possession of the ball.
