ositioning the Line Judge equidistant from the neutral zone and deep receivers on a punt is a good mechanic in my book.
By starting out downfield the Line Judge can remain relatively stationary and get good looks back upfield towards the line, on the K team players coming down fast from their wide out positions, and on the area right in front of the deep receivers.
Those good looks translate to better overall coverage downfield on punts.
That mechanic will work well when the punt comes off as planned, but what if K decides to run a fake? Being downfield, the Line Judge now probably isn’t in the best position to deal with a fake. Even so, it’s not as bad as you might think. Read on.
