Knowing CPR and first aid brings with it some obligations, as I stated in Part I. Those obligations — to provide aid to an injured person who has consented to that aid — are very much in opposition to what sports officials are directed to do. When we put on the stripes, we are not supposed to be giving assistance to the athletes we’re officiating.

Our Good Samaritan conscience tells us to assist, but our knowledge of officiating liability directs us to let others handle it.

That’s the case when dealing with injuries on the field or the court. But let’s now turn our attention to another area of liability, one that deals with things we as officials ought to be handling.
