The first aid and CPR obligations

When you become certified in first aid and CPR, you take on certain obligations; and if you come upon a person who has been injured, you have a responsibility to provide assistance to that person. The assistance is conditioned upon identifying to the injured person that you are certified in first aid/CPR and asking the injured person if he would like assistance.

Assuming the injured person consents to your providing help, if you leave the scene without providing assistance, there is a possibility that you may be held liable for failing to render aid. That's how my first aid instructor described it, anyway.

States have what are called "Good Samaritan Laws." Such laws are on the books to help protect a person who provides emergency aid, without compensation, at the scene of an accident. Here is the actual wording for Nebraska's good Samaritan Law:
