History has been made: the first time a Black coach has won a Super Bowl, the first time two Black coaches were in a Super Bowl. A sign of sure progress. Or is it?
Sports are supposed to be colorblind. May the best man win: Isn’t that supposed to be regardless of race, color, or creed. So, why is it a big deal when Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith lead their teams in arguably what is the biggest game on this planet.
And just who are these two men?
Tony Dungy is the son of two educators from Jackson, Michigan. He was a two-sport athlete in high school, where he played guard on the basketball team and quarterback on the football team. He attended the University of Minnesota where he not only played quarterback but was the career leader in pass attempts (576), completions (274), touchdown passes (25), and passing yards (3,577). That's good enough to finish fourth in the Big Ten career total offense.
