1919: The war is over!
The season of 1919 was highlighted by the return of many football players who had been away for two seasons serving their country. It should be mentioned, though, that there were many others who never did return to the striped field, having made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. Others suffered such horrific injuries in the line of duty that participation in the sport they loved was beyond them.
The return of the players who served gave the competition level of the game a very pronounced boost. There were at least three undefeated teams of note in the 1919 season: Notre Dame, Texas A & M, and Harvard. An asterisk must accompany Harvard’s season as they were tied by a tough Princeton squad, 10 to 10.
