he game that was being played in the United States in the late 1800s and early twentieth century was extremely rough and tumble. If you remember, a few editions back in this series we pointed out that the game had become so brutal, it was being banned by many universities across the country .
The Football Rules Committee tried to address the issues and complaints registered by opponents via rule changes, but that did not seem to be enough to pacify them. The Committee also addressed the complaint from within football circles about equal representation on the rules body by inviting Alonzo Stagg from the University of Chicago to join their ranks.
The storm of opposition from 1902 that had once been pacified was bubbling up again. The complaints were numerous by critics, both inside and outside the game.
