art X of our ongoing series on the history of early football rules left off with changes incorporated at the rules convention of 26 March, 1887. The group of rules makers did not wait long to meet again since another convention was held on 14 May of the same year.
The second (May ) and third (June) conventions of 1887
These gatherings were attended by the same men who were at the earlier March convention. The purpose: to finish some unsettled business.
After much thought in the months between the two spring conventions of 1887, the group decided to adopt provisions that would introduce a second referee at the games. The idea was to have one ref who would watch the players and a second who would be responsible for the ball.
