Scrimmage kicks

 

The first thing to discuss about scrimmage kicks is the formation. There must be a player at least seven yards behind the line of scrimmage, with no players in position to receive a hand-to-hand snap. Remind the crew that this can be accomplished in a variety of ways: a typical punt formation, a typical kick-for-point formation, or an odd formation meeting the criteria of a scrimmage kick. Discuss the positioning and responsibilities of each crew member during the pre-snap period, during the snap, after the kick, and during the return. It might be a good idea once again to let the individual members of the crew tell what they will be doing at those different intervals of the scrimmage kick.
