When I first learned that I had been drafted onto my "big brother's" varsity crew, I was both excited and anxious. Their Umpire had just had his hip replaced during the off season, and his status was doubtful. I spent three years on the crew's sideline assisting with the chains. During that time I observed, learned — and wished I was out there. I never thought I'd wind up being the Umpire on the crew. As I explained in Part I, my association LIAFO http://liafo.org only uses a Referee, Head Linesman, and Line Judge for the lower levels. I had never worked as an Umpire and really didn't know anything about the mechanics. Where would I go for help learning the position?
