Complicated issues

his season, as in every season in the past, some official will mistakenly penalize what should be a personal foul as unsportsmanlike conduct. The consequences could range from nothing to affecting the outcome of the game. Even personal foul enforcement confuses some officials as to whether to enforce as a live ball or dead ball. Then, of course, the combination of unsportsmanlike, live ball personal and/or dead ball personals requires careful consideration.

Last season the Halloween game in Georgia between Duluth and Dacula found a mistakenly enforced personal foul being protested resulting in a replay of the game from the point of the foul. The culprit was a personal foul enforced as a dead ball rather than what was a live ball foul.

How is an official supposed to know the difference?
