Last time out, the discussion centered on effective communication, and specifically, "preventive officiating" — that technique all officials must use to keep the game flowing smoothly and under control. Earlier, I made the point that regardless of the amount of "book" study you do, the real learning comes with on-the-field game reality: You experience it first hand on the field, use visualization to help you handle it better the next time out, and so on.
By no means do I have a PhD in psychology, but there are some simple things you can do, as a rookie official, to prepare for what a coach will do and how to handle those situations.
Gee, that coach was sure nice in pregame
Ever notice how a lot of coaches are masters at the Jekyll and Hyde thing? Nice as can be, joking around, and generally pleasant to be around — in the pregame. Then the game starts — and the gamesmanship begins...
