I'm several years removed from my "rookie" season, but the memory of some of my rookie "mistakes" is still pretty clear. Areas where I made mistakes:

  • not having a complete understanding of the rules and mechanics;
  • not having any game experience;
  • being in less than optimum physical condition;
  • not communicating effectively with crewmates, coaches, and players; and
  • making the transition from just "watching" the game to officiating it.

This series of articles points out some of the pitfalls awaiting new football officials and hopefully, through the use of some "Rookie Rules," provides some assistance to the latest group of "new" guys.

Let's start out with a look at the consequences of not having a complete understanding of the rules.
