What if the kick does not reach the end zone? When does the kick become dead?

Remember, an attempt for a field goal is just another scrimmage kick under NFHS rules. Missed field goals do not return to the line of scrimmage. The receiving team can return an attempted field goal that falls short of the goal line. The kickers can commit first touching. If the receivers touch the ball without being blocked into it, it can be recovered by K but cannot be advanced.

When a kick crosses the plane of the end zone, it becomes dead with the exception of a scoring attempt that becomes dead when it is apparent the kick has ended. The reason is: R can block a kick from going over the crossbar; therefore, the ball is still alive until it is clear the kick is good, or it is obvious it is no good.
