onday Night Football for referees of the Suffolk County Football Officials Association (SCFA) took on a new meaning this past season as they gathered each week to review games from the previous weekend.
The SCFA has approximately 150 members who service the 50 high schools of the county located on the eastern end of Long Island, New York. Schools range in size from the massive Sachem High School, which boasts of being the second largest high school in the country though that will change next year as the school is divided, to schools so small they must be combined to have the minimum number of players for the football team.
Twenty-four established crews cover varsity games; crews by rotation may receive two varsity games on a single weekend. The Board of the Association set a policy where each crew’s referee or his designate must appear for a weekly meeting, normally on Monday night, to discuss their game(s) the past weekend. Topics covered include facilities available for the crews — parking, dressing room, security — to conduct of coaches, field problems, equipment problems, etc.
