Your Attention Please

nnouncers have become as much a part of a football game as cheerleaders. Announcers can range from excellent to very bad. Most officials seem to ignore announcers most of the time; it is only when they show a complete ignorance of the game or demonstrate unsportsmanlike behavior that they really attract our attention.

Recently, a friend whose son plays football sent me the following e-mail.

Thought of you last night at the JV football game. We were away and for the first time I witnessed a PA announcer who openly disagreed with the on-field referees.  On a number of times, he disputed which side initiated the offsides (funny he consistently favored the home team).  Several times he stated that "I don't understand that call."  On an extra point he insisted on calling it no good, while the referee stood in the middle of the field thrusting his arms in the air as if he was exercising. 

And what was interesting about it, is the guy didn't know the game.  It took him 2 plays to understand what happened on a "dead ball foul."  When he finally figured it out, we had to lead a standing ovation from the visitors side.
