In the NFL

When you view any NFL game, whether at the stadium or in front of your home television, you know exactly what was called and the penalty for that call. The NFL has the resources to equip each referee with an on-field mike to announce the penalties, as well as the offending players. In doing so, they've gone a long way in helping educate their viewing audience.

NFL referees have developed excellent presentation skills using the microphone and generally use excellent signal mechanics. At Division I college venues, the technology is similar to the NFL's, and, although the college referees as a group are not as skilled in using the P.A. system, the communication is by and large excellent.
