(Editor’s Note: NCAA Rules) When last we left you, we were pontificating on some examples of “double talk” or “coaches’ speak.” that we found interesting. Here is yet another helping from that same plate.
4.2.1.b...A player or an airborne player who touches a pylon is out of bounds behind the goal line.
When is an “airborne player” not a player? This is like saying the ball shall be declared dead by an official or the referee!! In this statement and also in 4.2.1.a, no additional meaning is added by including the words “or an airborne player” so why include them? If the rule states, “A player who.......”, it is easily interpreted to mean a player who is on the ground, in the air, running, jumping, being tackled, or in any other physical state!
