he Texas High School Coaches Association has presented Eugene Smith the Curly Hays award for a distinguished career by a football official.

At the Honor Luncheon of THSCA on August 1 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Fort Worth Radisson Hotel, with approximately 500 coaches and families in attendance, master of ceremonies Craig Way presented Gene with this prestigious award. The award, honoring the memory of Abilene official Curly Hays, was instituted shortly after his death and has been awarded only to officials with a major impact upon Texas high school football.
