The death of NFL player Kory Stringer on Augst 1, 2001, focused our attention: The combination of football and hot, humid weather can be deadly, as indeed it was in the Minnesota weather in that fateful late July.
Weather on the 8's
As officials we need to be conscious of the weather for a number of reasons:
- Wind causes the ball to do things that are just not normal.
- Rain makes player and ball movement unpredictable.
- Cold weather hampers concentraion.
- Lightning scares us to death.
- Heat and humidity can kill.
